Hire Me! I’m a Poor, Starving College Student.

Last night I decided to update my resume so I can go looking for part-time jobs. After speaking to the International Office at my school, I found out that with a residence permit I am legally allowed to work 10 hours per week. This was fantastic news! I can tell I am going to run out of money by the end of my stay here if I don’t find some income fast! City life is not cheap. On Monday, I went to a babysitting agency and filled out an application. I was told I could apply, but most families are looking for someone who speaks Dutch. With this said, I thought I should to continue on with my quest. While walking around the city with my aunts and my cousin last weekend, I found the most wonderful American bookstore. I was certain they would be fine with hiring a non-Dutch employee. Of course, after speaking with the woman at the desk, the first thing she asked me was, “Do you speak Dutch?” She then informed me that they only hire people who speak both Dutch and English. Slightly discouraged, I set out to find something else. I ended up giving my resume to a New York pizza place and Ben & Jerry’s. I figure that these places are “American” enough to hire, well, an American. Of course, these places asked me if I spoke Dutch as well and their English was quite broken. The current employees were clearly more fluent in Dutch. Though today was quite disappointing, I will continue on with my quest. I’m afraid I might have to resort to the McDonald’s assembly lines…
